The Da Vinci Code claims that Mary was not only
the wife of Jesus but also his chosen successor.
As a descendant of the royal line of Benjamin,
Mary’s marriage to Jesus would have merged the
royal lines of Benjamin and Judah and created a
powerful Jewish dynasty. Peter, however, was a
sexist disciple who jealously opposed Mary and
sought to discredit her before the rest of the
disciples. The church, which was misogynist and
patriarchal, took Peter’s side, repudiating Mary’s
leadership role and transforming her into a sordid
prostitute. In this way they removed Mary’s
rightful place as the cofounder of Christianity and
suppressed Jesus’ teaching concerning goddess
worship and the sacred feminine.
The book further claims that under persecution from the church, Mary fled to France
with her daughter Sarah, where she found refuge with the Jewish community. Her
descendants founded the Merovingian dynasty of French kings, through whom her
lineage continues today. Although traditionally the “Holy Grail” has been understood as
the cup or chalice that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper, The Da Vinci Code claims
the Grail is Mary herself, who carried Jesus’ child in her womb.

Was Mary Magdalene a
prostitute??
No, there is no evidence that Mary was a prostitute. This
depiction arose from the confusion of several different
women in Scripture.
What do we know historically
about Mary Magdalene?
Mary was healed of demon possession by Jesus; she
was one of the women who supported him and his
disciples; and she was the first person to see the
resurrected Jesus.
Did the church demote Mary
from her role as Jesus’
successor?
There is no evidence for such a demotion. Mary is
portrayed positively in the Gospels as the most
prominent of the women disciples. The later church
honored Mary as a saint.
Was Mary from the royal
house of Benjamin?
No ancient source identifies Mary’s tribal ancestry.
Furthermore, there was no royal house of Benjamin with
a claim to Israel’s throne.
Was Mary Magdalene the
real “Holy Grail”??
Grail legends did not even arise until the late Middle
Ages, over 1000 years after Christ. Even these legends
were never connected to Mary or to the sacred feminine.
Are the later traditions about
Mary Magdalene true?
No. Legends about Mary’s journey to France did not
appear until the 11th century. We have no reliable
historical data beyond the New Testament period.
Do these later legends
describe Mary’s role as
Jesus’ wife?
No. Even if we were to take these medieval legends
seriously, they never mention Jesus’ marriage, the birth
of a child to Mary, or her connection to the sacred
feminine.
